About Chemical Peels

To maintain healthy skin function and have glowing skin, chemical peels can be used as a stand-alone treatment or be used in conjunction with other dermal treatments to enhance results.

Chemical peels provide a deeper, chemical exfoliation to remove skin blemishes, sundamaged skin, and congestion to make your skin glow, feel smooth, and appear hydrated and plump.

We use a variety of gentle peels that target the superficial layers of the skin depending on your skin concern. Treatments are so gentle with minimal downtime, making it a great lunch-time treatment to give you dewy skin instantly.

How does it work?

A chemical peel is a cosmetic skin treatment where a chemical solution, such as an alpha-hydroxy-acid (AHA), a beta-hydroxy-acid (BHA), or a Jessner peel is applied on the skin to chemically exfoliate your dead skin cells while stimulating collagen and elastin and promoting healthy skin growth to give you a smoother, brighter, and clearer skin. We use superficial peels consisting of AHA acids such as glycolic or lactic, BHA acids such as salicylic, or Jessner peels. Glycolic and lactic acid peels dissolve the bonds holding dead skin cells together on the upper layers of the skin, resulting in clearer skin but also allowing better absorption of active ingredients into skin. These acids also thicken the healthy layers of the skin whilst also stimulating collagen, elastin, and hydration, making your skin appear firmer and plumper. Salicylic acids (BHA) and Jessner peels are used to focus on clearing congestion and declogging your pores as it helps control oil flow and reduce congestion and comedones. Your skin will be renewed and resurfaced with chemical peels where fine lines and pigmentation will improve, with increased hydration and firmness to the skin.

What happens during your treatment?

Your skin will be assessed by our Cosmetic Physician and Registered Nurse and your concerns will be discussed before recommending a customised treatment plan. Before starting your treatment, your skin will be cleansed twice and degreased to remove oils, and your customised peel will be applied using either a gauze or fan brush and will stay on for up to 10minutes depending on the peel. Your skin may feel tingly for a few minutes and this can be managed with our cooling zimmer machine before it is removed.

What results should I expect?

Your skin should feel and look smoother and brighter, and your pores will be clearer and tighter. Approximately 5-7 days after your treatment, your skin may flake with AHA/BHA peels, or have mild-moderate peeling with Jessner peels, which are expected. This will gradually exfoliate off your skin where a gentle scrub is recommended after day 5 post-treatment. Over time with consistent treatments, your fine lines will soften, pigmentation will improve, skin will appear plumper, and your skin will have fewer breakouts as well.

What are the side effects and complications?

Expected side effects include mild erythema that may last approximately 30min – 1 hour. You may experience mild breakouts as the treatment will purge your skin and bring out your dirt and oils from deep inside towards the surface, however, this will gradually disappear, leaving your skin cleaner and clearer with fewer congestions. There is a chance of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, thus, your skin will be thoroughly assessed before prescribing pre-treatment skin prep serums if necessary.

How many treatments will I need?

Results vary depending on your skin type, condition, desired results, and lifestyle. Generally, a monthly treatment of an AHA or BHA peel is recommended for a deep clean, however, if you have skin concerns such as acne or pigmentation, you may require 3-6 treatments where results are enhanced with active skincare.

What post-care instructions are involved?

Avoiding sun exposure is essential to maintain results and prevent complications, as well as reapplying SPF 50+ sunscreen every 2 hours when outdoors. Avoid strenuous exercise and heat-inducing activities at least 2 days after treatments, and avoid other dermal treatments for 2 weeks as well after treatment. If needed, brightening serums need to be continued 5 days after treatment to maintain results and prevent complications. Active skincare (Vitamin A, Vitamin C, acids etc) is also essential to enhance and maintain results, however, do not apply active skincare for 5 days after treatment. A gentle exfoliating facial scrub is recommended after 3-5 days post-peel to buff away the flaking or peeling skin. It is not recommended to pick or peel at your skin during the flaking/peeling period as this may cause scarring and hyperpigmentation.
