About Pigmentation

Sun damage is one of the biggest factors that contribute to ageing, resulting in unwanted discoloration in the skin such as age spots and solar lentigines, and these be hard to get rid of even with proper skincare and regular skin treatments. Other unwanted blemishes include freckles, nevus of ota, melasma, and café-au-lait spots.

The discoloration in your skin can make you look dull and tired, and can have an impact on your confidence and self-esteem. Picoway delivers short bursts of energy into the skin to break up targeted pigmentation that will be absorbed and cleared by the body to give you the clear, porcelain skin that you deserve. Book in your treatment today to achieve your PICO-GLOW.

How does it work?

Picoway utilises the shortest laser pulse on the market to shatter the unwanted pigment into tiny particles with photoacoustic energy, which are then eliminated by the body’s natural processes over the next 4-6 weeks.

What happens during your treatment?

A thorough history will be taken and your skin will then be assessed to recommend the safest and most suitable treatment plan for you by our Cosmetic Physician and Registered Nurse. Depending on your skin type, you may need to prep your skin at least 2 weeks before your first session to reduce any complications such as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.  Before starting your treatment, your skin will be cleansed twice and degreased with alcohol. The treatment will feel like very tiny rubber bands on the skin and can be very tolerable. However, a cooling zimmer machine can be applied if needed. Once the treatment is finished, a post-laser gel will be applied to soothe your skin, followed by SPF 50+ to protect your skin.

What results should I expect?

Your skin should appear brighter with fewer blemishes and a more even skintone, and your unwanted pigmentation should appear lighter after every session while the shattered pigmented particles are cleared through the body.

Are there any side effects?

Expected side effects include erythema and slight discoloration of the treatment site. Some patients may experience temporary darkening (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation) of the skin after the treatment for a few months, however, your skin will usually resolve to normal pigmentation color.

How many treatments will I need?

Results vary depending on pigmentation type, location, depth, and size, as well as your skin type and lifestyle. Generally, 4-6 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart are required to clear pigmentation, however, some patients may require more than 10 treatments for optimal results.

What is the post-care involved?

Avoiding sun exposure is essential to maintain results and prevent complications, as well as reapplying SPF 50+ sunscreen every 2 hours when outdoors. Avoid strenuous exercise and heat-inducing activities at least 2 days after treatments, and avoid other dermal treatments for 2 weeks as well after treatment. If needed, brightening serums need to be continued 5 days after treatment to maintain results and prevent complications. Active skincare (Vitamin A, Vitamin C, acids etc) is also essential to enhance and maintain results, however, do not apply active skincare for 5 days after treatment.
